Cretan Time Line...updated

Neolithic Period
NEOLITHIC PERIOD (6500 - 2600 B.C)
No remains from the preneolithic period have been found on Crete.
Before the Neolithic period, people must have lived in caves at first and supported themselves by hunting and fishing, using stone and bone tools, and they must have known how to make simple clay pots.

Later they seem to have developed a primitive agriculture and started to make clay houses on rock foundations, to tame animals and to decorate their pottery with different colors and patterns as well as making clay images of animals. The various finds made and the location of the first dwelling places lead to the supposition they were part of a common eastern Mediterranean civilization and not a distinct Cretan people yet.
hmm not sure why it isn't playing

Crete begins to move into the Minoan era. Crete habitation begins to grow during the prepalatial period from 2600-1900bc but there still is no central authority figure.

Protopalatial- As migration from mainland Greece and Asia Minor begins, and clans grow larger- a central figure is introduced- a king. Palaces are constructed during this Protopalatian period (1900-1700)Around 1700 B.C palaces were destroyed by a powerful earthquake and then rebuilt again.

Neopalatial- 1700-1400 During this time Knossos and other sites are built and villas began to appear in the rural landscape. Paved roads connected these to the palace. Women began to have powerful roles. Migration of people from mainland Greece and Asia Minor continues and the Minoan culture becomes infused with mainland Greek culture and morphed into what we now call Mycenaen culture. For the first time, the Minoans who had a large naval trading fleet, encountered competition from Greece.  In 1375 Knossos was destroyed by a volcano which compromised the Minoans and allowed the Doric civilization to take over and flourish.
